If you e-file your taxes and you wind up getting rejected with the reject code “0769 – Tax Form – When Identity Protection PIN is significant, it must contain six numeric characters” then your in luck. We encountered and was able to finally get past this.
The problem is that on the bottom of the 1040 form just below the “Daytime phone number” field is a field labeled “If the IRS sent you an identity protection PIN enter it here”. You would think that this is where you put your 5-digit PIN number, but you don’t. You MUST leave this field blank. This PIN field is ONLY for a paid preparer to use.
Your 5-digit PIN is entered later on another form.
